"Boite à miniature", Louise Marie Adélaïde de Bourbon (1753-1821)

France, end of the 19th Century

Impres­sive glass and bronze doré work, cir­cu­lar, clear glass on the bot­tom pol­ished in radi­al form; the lid and the base rich­ly dec­o­rat­ed with ormolu flower gar­lands and rib­bons, very fine­ly chis­eled all around.
The very fine minia­ture gouache is signed on the right side V. SERS and cov­ered with the orig­i­nal soft faceted glass.
On the back­side hand­writ­ten in ink on vel­lum Ade­laide de Bourbon“

This minia­ture is made after the paint­ing from Marie Louise Élis­a­beth Vigée Lebrun (1755 — 1842). The orig­i­nal por­trait de la Duchesse d’Orléans, we find at the Muse­um of Fine Arts Mar­seille, a copy of the orig­i­nal por­trait is part of the col­lec­tion at the Château de Versailles.

Louise Marie Adélaïde de Bour­bon-Penthièvre, Duchess of Orléans  (13 March 175323 June 1821), was the daugh­ter of Louis Jean Marie de Bour­bon, Duke of Penthièvre and of Princess Maria There­sa Felic­i­tas of Mod­e­na. After the death of her broth­er, Louis Alexan­dre de Bour­bon-Penthièvre, she became the wealth­i­est heiress in France pri­or to the French Rev­o­lu­tion. She mar­ried Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, and she was the moth­er of France’s last king, Louis Philippe I.
