Exceptional Set of Art Noveau Furniture

Vienna, around 1900/05

Of museum quality. Consisting of a large cabinet, a smaller cabinet and a longcase clock.

In Macassar solid wood and veneer on oak; satinwood inlays with wine grapes and leaves; partly with beautiful quarter veneers and nickel-plated mounts and columns, each embellished with four cabochons, a tuscan Giallo Antico” marble top and a bevelled mirror in the back.
The inner fitment very finely manufactured.

The design probably dates back to August Ungethüm (1864 — 1911). He was pupils of Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann and had access to the best artist circles at the turn of the century in Vienna and their latest designs. As the eldest son, August worked in the father’s company A. Ungethüm,” one of the most important furniture manufacturers in Vienna.

This exceptional set is a perfect example of the modern, innovative design in Vienna around 1900. Especially the work of the Wiener Werkstätten” was groundbreaking and ahead of its time in Europe.
