A Pair Of Bronze Doré Girandoles
um 1900
The candelabras have moulded, foliate bases and stems embellished with blossom garlands. The stem merges into a twisted acanthus branch, issuing four scrolling, acanthus-decorated arms terminating in foliate drip pans and nozzles. The small amphora crowning the central stem is removable, allowing space for a fifth candle.
This beautiful pair is based on a design draft of Juste Aurèle Meissonier, Paris 1730⁄1740. Comparable models can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and in the Wallace Collection.
