Ferrari Cockpit Chair, Design 2017

on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the automobile manufacturer from Maranello, Ferrari Design Center under Flavio Manzoni in cooperation with Poltrona Frau, Limited production series

The chair features an architectural and modular structure; the outer shell of the Cockpit Chair was formed from carbon fiber or Alutex.

The swivel mechanism reflects the same design and mechanical elements as a Ferrari steering wheel and is crafted from polished aluminum with a red adjustment knob. This allows the height and tilt of the chair to be adjusted. The five-spoke base is also executed in polished aluminum with black castors.

The padded seat and backrest are upholstered in black leather with a red central stripe, inspired by racing seats. The double stitching along the outer edge of the chair is executed in red thread. The headrest is centrally adorned with an embossed leather prancing horse, Ferrari’s symbol. On the front of the seat, the aluminum Ferrari” lettering appears centrally as a signature, while on the back the emblem signature Poltrona Frau 1912” is featured.

History:

Ferrari and Poltrona Frau jointly present Cockpit,” the first and only office chair in a small limited series ever designed by the Ferrari Design Centre. This chair is the result of a collaboration between two distinguished manufacturers: the legendary automobile maker Ferrari and the renowned Italian furniture manufacturer Poltrona Frau.

The chair was conceived and designed by the team led by Flavio Manzoni, who is also responsible for the designs of recent Ferrari models, including the LaFerrari Aperta, the GTC4 Lusso, and the 812 Superfast.

The form of this seat would not seem out of place in any of these models. The Cockpit Chair was designed in two versions: President and Executive. The President version, with its high backrest, resembles a racing seat from a Ferrari and is the model we are able to offer from our collection.

It is the manager model with a high backrest that generously supports the upper body, its ergonomics inspired by motorsport seats. It represents a synthesis of automotive innovation and inspiration — the result of 70 years of Ferrari experience.

According to Ferrari, the same materials were used for the seats as those found in the brand’s famous sports cars. The outer shell of the cockpit is crafted either in carbon fiber or in Alutex — an aluminum-glass fiber composite. Every element is in harmony with the brand’s DNA and its ability to create a perfect balance between performance and timeless elegance.

Poltrona Frau has long equipped the interiors of Ferrari vehicles. With its expertise in leather craftsmanship and the production of iconic chairs, Poltrona Frau shapes the materials, develops the upholstery, and creates the most refined and high-performance mechanisms. The Italian furniture brand has incorporated its complete ergonomic know-how into the mechanism for adjusting the backrest and seat height.

An office chair that captures the excitement and speed of a driver’s seat, as well as the passion for motorsport.

The cockpit is a place where concentration, quick reflexes, and intuition merge with the will to win. It is a space where the contact between body and seat generates dynamic sensations that help the driver steer the car as efficiently as possible. The architectural and modular structure of the chair gives it its unmistakable appearance, making it a perfect collector’s and enthusiast’s piece — not only for Ferrari fans, but especially because this chair is no longer in production.
