Magnificent Viennese Salon Mirror, last third of the 19th century
Grand, stately salon mirror with elegant gilded wood (water-gilded) finish, featuring a finely ornamented and profiled frame, richly decorated all around with delicate floral and foliate motifs.
The base on which the upper mirror section rests is slightly profiled and likewise executed in gilded wood. At the lower two corners of the mirror are large, scrolled acanthus leaf decorations. The salon mirror is crowned by a large shell-shaped ornamental element, flanked on both sides by a garland of flowers and leaves, and set upon the gracefully curved frame.
The original antique mirror plate is in beautiful condition, which alone represents a rarity in this impressive size. The mirror offered here likely originated from a salon in a Viennese city palace, possibly from one of the Ringstrasse palaces, where mirrors of this size were typically hung above a grand fireplace in one of the ceremonial halls or reception rooms.
Magnificent mirrors of this style can still be found in the great Viennese palaces or in the stately residences of the aristocracy of the period.
Objects from a Viennese city palace rarely appear on the market and represent a fine piece of Viennese history. You will also find a comparable mirror with significant Viennese provenance from the Palais Kinsky in our collection, please click HERE to review.
