Gondola Chair

Venice, last quarter of the 19th century

A very fine Renaissance-style gondola chair from the 19th century, beautifully carved with floral and ornamental elements, a large mascarone, and two lion heads at the ends of the armrests.

The backrest of the chair is decorated with a medallion depicting a young Venetian and is crowned by a violin scroll.

Gondola chairs originated in Venice in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and were used by the elite as comfortable seating in gondolas.

This chair reflects the shape of a Venetian gondola, which was particularly popular in the 19th century for decorating rooms in a worldly and exotic style.
