Impressive Cabinet
An impressive piece, designed in “Makart” (named after the great “Malerfürst”/“painting prince” Hans Makart 1840 – 1884) or “Viennese Ringstrassen” style; in walnut and burl wood veneer, the inside in oak.
The lower part, raised on six bun feet, has one big center and two slightly re-entrant flanking doors with fine marquetry floral and foliate inlays, applied with outset fluted, ebonized pilasters and finely carved capitals;
a white, light grey veined, moulded marble top above three palmettes decorated frieze drawers; four small columns and leaf decorated volutes divide the upper middle part in three sections of re-entrant ebonized framed, inlaid panels.
The upper part beautifully decorated with finely elaborated columns, two shelves and two flanking paneled cabinet doors with fine marquetry inlays of vases on pedestals issuing flowers and leaves in ebonized frames, a palmette frieze above; the arched pediment with moulded cornice, greek key motive frieze and inlay decoration is flanked by two balustrade sections and amphorae.
The architectural draft of this stunning cabinet significantly reflects the grand design of the “Ringstrassen-Palais” in Vienna. An interesting detail is that some of the renowned “Ringstrassen” city palaces architects also designed the furniture for those places, often based palace’s actual façade style.
